Summer Kickoff
Post-grad life
Howdy!
Here I am! I am here! I am here and I am writing a Substack.
I am sitting in a bookshop in San Antonio writing a substack.
I have an iced Americano to my right, my notebook to my left, and Angelica sitting in front of me in a San Antonio bookstore while I write a Substack.
For my post-grad travel, I’ve been in San Antonio for two days, sleeping on Angelica’s bedroom floor. The night I drove in, we went to…
What makes this night possible:
Caribeaners linked together and draped around the rafters as a replacement for party streamers.
Drag DJ that seemed to disappear every 5 minutes.
An arts n crafts room, filled with old magazines, glue, and scissors to make collages. There were an interesting number of Ronald Reagan magazines but it balanced out with nature and woman-centered-western-cowboy-style zines.
A game corner, complete with Twister.
A kink corner behind a curtain, complete with a kink menu.
A bubble gun.
Name tags.
Arm wrestling.
Various vintage clothes vendors from which I bought a sweater vest shirt thingy. Lots of rings, zines, and things I’m not cool enough to own.
Lots of stylish lesbians.
Happy pride! Community is SO cool and SO important!
Last weekend, my sister’s friend scored free tickets to the Maggie Rogers (with The Japanese House opening) concert and was so kind to pass the tickets along to us! The initial tickets were for lawn seats but after check-in at the box office, we got upgraded to the second row of seats. I sang and swayed through The Japanese House—who sounds exactly the same live as on their record (evident in their NPR Tinydesk). Witnessing “Boyhood” live was very important for me—I’ll probably have to write a letter just for this song.
Maggie Rogers was aesthetically, emotionally, and musically beautiful. Holding a powerful stage presence that compels an audience to move with you is difficult, but for Maggie, it seems natural. Her vocals were breathtaking as she changed up her songs to add more runs and prove her range.
She brought out Leon Bridges to close the show with “River”. The Dallas crowd was very happy for this collab. Even for how slow “River” is, the energy in the room didn’t die. I find it funny how everybody’s story of meeting Leon Bridges takes place in a coffee shop. I like to imagine that when he’s home from recording and tour, all he does is get coffee. I wonder what his order is.
I’ve been replaying The Last of Us Part II. I still very much love this game. It makes me want to make stories. I’m a little nervous about season two of the show because I cherish the game so much.
Dat has been out in Seattle for a couple of weeks now for his internship. He keeps sending me pretty pictures of trees, deep in volume and their shade of green. I’m very jealous. I’m very proud of him. I miss him.
I see Adrianne Lenker on Sunday. I might be more excited about the show than I was about my own graduation. I’m thinking about getting last-minute tickets to the Monday show.
I miss playing songs with my friends.
Uhhhh I can’t think of anything else to write and I don’t wanna think about my job search soooooo see ya l8r!
Stay cool,
